Environmental Superintendent

Reporting to the Manager Environment and Community, the incumbent would provide specialist environment support and services to site managers and manage stakeholder relations and expectations consistent with minimising risk to the environment and in a manner that complies with environmental legislation and licence conditions and with the Company’s Vision, Values and policies.

This is a FIFO (or Local) position on a 6 weeks on, 2 weeks off roster (the roster will be amended during the operational phase of the project) for a PNG Citizen. Preferred Points of Hire are Woodlark, Alotau, Port Moresby and Lae.

Key roles and responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that all environmental monitoring points are established for regular sampling covering WML’s Environmental Permit.
  • Establishing a site Environmental Laboratory.
  • Establishing an Environmental data base management system including reporting.
  • Building, manipulating, and updating databases
  • Supporting the improvement of environmental management-related understanding and skills across Woodlark Operations.
  • Managing timely and effective environmental approvals for changes to development and mining plans.
  • Contributing to the development of action plans (eg, environment management plans).
  • Setting up a sample handling management system including chain of custody.
  • Providing operational guidance to ensure compliance with the EP while delivering results.
  • Inspecting and providing guidance on safe storage and handling of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
  • Implementing and overseeing of installation of storage bunds, SOPs and hazardous material management plans.
  • Preparation of Annual and Quarterly Environmental Performance reports.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

  • Behaviour consistent with Geopacific’s Values
  • Degree in Physical Earth Sciences or similar
  • At least seven (7) years relevant experience, with practical understanding of environmental regulatory environments, best practice and general environmental systems and procedures including Demonstrate practical knowledge of GoPNG’s Environmental Permit conditions
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ work experience in a mining environment
  • Computer literate and familiarity with environmental management information systems software, must be advanced user of one of the following MP5 and Hydstra or similar
  • Must be able to import and export multiple data formats
  • Must be able to work with field environmental sensors
  • Must be able to setup interactive mapping frontend with base tables in the background
